“Art is the meeting ground of the world inside and the world outside.”

Eleanor Ulman

“Art-making is a central focus of my counseling work.  Our images are forms of communication; they are meaningful responses to the world around us. They are expressions that go beyond words and often show us things about our circumstances and ourselves that words are not able to articulate.  Making art enhances perceptual acuity, increases cognitive functioning, allows integration of the senses, and activates our creative center; all of these aspects are therapeutic.  My profession is a beautiful partnering of my interests in psychology and art and my desire to help others - to somehow address the suffering I see among this exquisitely beautiful world.”

Art therapy blends counseling with the creative process of making art.  The therapist guides the use of art materials in a supportive, non-judgmental environment, focusing not on the outcome or product, but on the therapeutic qualities of the art making itself.  Artistic self-expression can help people resolve conflicts, increase self awareness, and achieve personal insights.  The visible expressions become a tangible record of the individual’s process in counseling.

HOW IT WORKS

Allows sensory integration

Our life experiences involve our senses. When we are working in therapy and add a sensory level engagement with materials, images, activity, etc., we are connecting and processing on that level. We are working in the place that is connected to memory, trauma and all of the ways we take in information. Engaging our senses allows us to access this material for wellness.

01

Sharpens cognitive skills

So many aspects of art making support our thinking processes. We are problem solving and experimenting with solutions and this transfers from the creative work into larger life areas. Studies are continuing to show that our memory, thought patterns and overall brain function is improved when we engage in image making and other expressive arts.

02

Enhances perceptual skills

How we perceive or see things impacts how we think, behave, and interact. Creating and working with images enables to see things differently, to try on a new perspective. This is often the key to making changes in therapy. Art-making can support you in this process.

Activates the creative center

More and more we are finding out how engaging our creative brain and heart moves us toward a more whole and healed way of being. Art making connects us to our creative life and allows us to live more fully into new ways of seeing and being. It’s whole-brained activity that supports our therapeutic goals.
